Jewellery has also been used as a gift to offer in the form of worship and many people today can be seen wearing a cross around their neck to show their faith. Jewellery will always be present in modern society and is often given as a sign of love or affection, never more so than when used in the marriage ceremony.

The wedding ring is given as a symbol of eternity, with no beginning and no end. The beginning of the wedding ring lies in North Africa. The ancient Egyptians braided the rushes and reeds that sprang up along the fertile plains of the Delta to form the first wedding rings. The ring is worn on the third finger of the left hand as it is believed that the vein of this finger travels straight to the heart. Jewellery has some part to play in history too. During the 16th century the Spaniards established an empire to acquire the gold and jewels of Peru and pre-Columbian Mexico. In the 1840's there was mass migration to California, USA, due to gold being found in the region. These mining camps began to establish themselves as permanent towns, developing a new area and economy. Jewellers began to receive recognition as artists throughout the world. The purpose of jewellery has changed very little over time.

It is still used to show wealth or religious status. However, the main change has been how jewellery is manufactured. With the improvements in technology, jewellery can be more elaborate and manufactured at a lower cost, making it available to the masses. Modern Jewellery can be made from a variety of precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum and often contains suitable gemstones such as diamonds or emeralds. There are even man made materials that have been developed such as cubic zirconia which is often referred to as Diamonique, which has been developed as a diamond substitute. There is no doubt that jewellery has stood the test of time and is here to stay and the variety of styles available has become endless.

With the rising numbers of people who suffer from allergies, the topic of sensitivities to home construction materials is more prevalent than ever. Many people equate a carpet allergy with wool fibers or dust mites, but there can be a variety of allergens causing a reaction.

One of the most common ways that people are allergic to carpet isn't a carpet allergy at all but instead an allergy to the fecal matter of dust mites (not the mites themselves as some people believe). Dust mites live on organic matter such as shed skin flakes, making a carpet an ideal place for them as you shed tiny bits of skin where ever you go. The best solutions to a dust mite allergy are to vacuum regularly, use an air filter, and regular washing of bedding.

When considering carpets for a a household with allergies, there are a few options. Carpets come in two basic sub-types: natural and synthetic fiber. Natural fiber carpets range from wool to many types of plant fiber like sisal, coir (coconut husk), jute, and seagrass. When people are allergic to a natural fiber carpet, it is usually lanolin on the wool that is causing the problem if it is actually the carpet that they're allergic to and not another element of the carpet that's causing issues.

The alternative to natural fiber carpets is, of course, synthetic fiber carpets. However, some people may be allergic to synthetic fibers or to the backing or adhesives in the carpet. If you are allergic to adhesives or carpet backings (like latex) remember that these things can be found in natural fiber carpets as well; not all of a natural carpet is natural after all.

To test to make sure that you're not allergic or overly sensitive to a new carpet that you'd like to install in your home, ask the retailer for a small sample piece from the roll that they'd be using to carpet your home. Put the piece of carpet into a container and seal it up. Leave the container—clear glass works best for this—in a warm sunny area for a few days; after the sample has had time to out-gas, open it up and check it for irritating odours. Don't forget to do a touch test to see if you have any contact sensitivities to it as well.

Your best bets if you are actually allergic to carpet fibers or the other materials used in them are numerous. First, talk to your carpet retailer about carpets that qualify for LEED points; these carpets produce less of the harmful VOC gasses. If your reaction is minimal to a particular type of carpet, ask the retailer to air out the carpeting before it's installed so that it gives off less fumes that you find irritating; take the time to air out your house well as much as possible after the carpet is installed as well to cut down on noxious fumes. If worse comes to worse though and you just don't think that you will be able to live with a carpet due to extreme allergies to carpet material or extreme dust mite allergies you may want to look in to other options such as hardwood, linoleum/marmoleum, or bamboo floors. If this seems like a better option for you, check with your retailer to ensure that the product you choose is low or non-VOC as these products are also made with adhesives.

REMEMBER YOUR LAST CONVERSATION WITH THAT family relative who couldn't talk enough of how much they saved on their last holiday package deal? Just because your email seems flooded at times with seemingly impossibly priced travel offers, and you find Internet search engines are flooded with 1000's of sites selling internet travel besides big hotel brands and branded distribution sites don't discount them all.

Who can you count on?
Just four or five years ago, when you looked for travel discounts you could choose between a travel agent, the airline offices and the hotels themselves, and maybe, if you were lucky, some travel guru down the street. Today, there's a massive range of things you can do online, and a lot of them can save significant amounts of money.

What does this mean?

This means that online distribution channel is extremely successful in reaching buyers and buyers are finding it more confirmable to shop online. They are seeing a broader range of travel options and variety of products and packages. And it's more likely that consumer wants to control that transaction through access to more competitive pricing. Pricing is becoming key factor to determine the sale.

Key factors: Why travelers prefer to book online

Online travel shoppers are not very loyal on where they shop—65 percent of online travelers do not view themselves as brand-loyal. As much as they love to shop online and spend their time researching what suits their needs, they are not loyal to the companies from which they buy.

The above scenario indicated that the travel suppliers have no choice but to participate in this online distribution channel. The suppliers are realizing that the traditional channels like GDS (Global Distribution System)/travel agent and call center/reservation office is somewhat inefficient and expensive, especially when the economy is weak. Ignoring online distribution channel and concentrating only on traditional distribution channels will result in lower occupancy, and higher distribution and operational costs for travel suppliers. As online channels become more popular among suppliers their participation is increasing.

How Pricing and Distribution Become Key

9/11 caused a dramatic shift in how consumers booked their travel. The instability caused a large drop in demand for airlines, hotels and car rentals leading to ever-lower prices. This low demand factor forced travel suppliers to introduce unprecedented discounts. Travel suppliers struggled to sell seats, rooms, car rentals to a significantly shrunk leisure and business travel market. Every air seat, room and auto not booked cost their companies money. Better to sell dirt cheap than not to sell at all. But how to get the word out?

Smart, proactive suppliers adopted the Wal-Mart business model—sell low and distribute inexpensively and efficiently. But how?

The Internet allowed them to reach consumers, sell inventory outstrips their less progressive competition. Those suppliers who had no clear Internet strategy or understanding of how the Web and online distribution works suffered.

Discount hotel sites attract millions of buyers with their special rates leading to stratospheric sales through these channels. They thrive on hoteliers selling their distressed inventory at a fraction of their normal rates. Occupancy is the lowest it's been in years, hoteliers continue to work with leading online retailers to move inventory at lower price.

The $6.3 billion in online hotel sales (2002) with are split roughly evenly between discount agency sites and hotel Web sites. PhoCusWright projects that around 75% of discount agency hotel site sales are via the merchant model, where the agency typically takes a 20-30% "margin" on the hotel net rate (instead of the usual 10% commission). This approach has helped profits at Expedia and Hotels.com, who have roughly 60% of online discount agency hotel sales. Travelocity and Orbitz are instituting the same successful approach. Other notable players thriving in this arena are Hotwire.com, http://www.hotels-and-discounts.com , Lodging.com and Travelweb.com.

What is the Future?
Online travel growth will continue to grow in 2003-2005, but it will slow down year by year compared to the record gains see so far. However millions of travelers haven't yet made their first purchase so the market is not near saturation. Technological improvements will soon make it possible to more easily dynamically package vacation deals including air, hotel and car leading to even lower prices but higher average sales. So growth is projected to come from customers buying more, higher-ticketed products online.

The growth of the online distribution channel will prove beneficial to the end user when the suppler finds it easier and more cost-effective to distribute their inventory there than over the traditional distribution channels. As technology becomes mature in the online distribution sector, it will become more effective and user friendly for the Buyers and thus will attract more Suppliers. Due to its low cost of distribution and emerging ability to package and cross sell inventory, prices will be attractive for years to come, until this channel eventually becomes a commodity

If you have been considering replacing a kitchen or bathroom floor, you may have looked into vinyl or linoleum floors and may well have been met with a jumble of contradicting and confusing data on the details of these flooring options.

Vinyl and linoleum are two very different flooring products. Unfortunately, the terms are often used synonymously which can be very misleading. Vinyl is PVC, made from petrochemicals. It is layered with a cushioned backing of felt or fibreglass, a colored or patterned middle, and a clear protective top layer. Linoleum is a mix of linseed oil, wood or cork flour, tree resins, ground limestone, and organic pigments pressed onto a jute backing.

Due to the method of fabrication, vinyl has a layer of color and pattern sandwiched into the middle of the product. Linoleum, in contrast, has a solid color or pattern the whole way through. While vinyl is often available in a multitude of different patterns built into it, linoleum is generally available in mottled solid colors or marbled colors. To get a linoleum pattern, you can use a selection of different colored tiles to create a pattern or use a contrast colored inlay.

The cost of both of these products can range wildly depending on what sort of quality you're looking at installing. As with most things, the better quality you choose, the longer the product will last and the more it will cost. High-end vinyl can last upwards of 30 years if treated well. However, it is not recommended for the hard use of a commercial kitchen as sharp instruments of excessive heat can cause damage. Quality linoleum can last upwards of 40 years if treated well and is often used in commercial kitchens as well as hospitals. It is not damaged by dropping knives on it or the normal heat you would find in a kitchen.

These days, one of the most important aspects for many people who are choosing materials for their new or renovated home is that of environmental friendliness. This is one area where vinyl and linoleum are extremely different. Vinyl, being a PVC product, is made from non-renewable petrochemicals, and while it does last a long time due to its inert properties, it is also not easy to get rid of for the same reasons. Vinyl is purported to be inert and as such does not take special considerations when you put it into a landfill, however, when you put an inert material into a landfill it stays there forever. Linoleum, on the other hand, is made from quickly renewable resources and does break down in a landfill.

Another deciding factor for many people when choosing a flooring type is that of health concerns. You may have read recently about VOCs or volatile organic compounds; these are gasses given off by a variety of things both inside and outside your home. VOCs can be natural, for example those given off by trees, or synthetic like those given off by plastics. VOCs can make you sick or exacerbate allergies and asthma. Vinyl gives off VOCs while linoleum does not. Linoleum often smells when it is freshly installed and some people may find that the smell of freshly installed linoleum is rather disagreeable, but with some good ventilation it will subside. Otherwise, linoleum is classified as asthma and allergy friendly by the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America.

In conclusion, it is very hard to get a straight up bunch of facts about the pros and cons of vinyl and linoleum online. Any website funded by a vinyl company is blatantly pro-vinyl and likewise for the linoleum companies. However, I think that if you're looking at the issue from the angle of renewability of materials and health of the consumer, linoleum wins this battle hands down.

You've cleaned and repainted your deck, maybe added a couple planters, but somehow, it still lacks pizzazz. Deck styles and accessories have changed considerably in the last few years. Think back to the last time you bought your table or umbrella; if it was more than 5 years ago, it could be, your deck needs some updating.

Here are a few ideas to help get you started. Some involve structural changes, while others will provide a quick pick-me-up for very little effort or cost.

Adding unusual shapes to a deck creates interest and adds a sense of style. Cut off the corners or create a kidney bean shape and voila, your deck becomes an artistic focal point. Instead of the boring rectangular trellis, get creative and shape it with curves or a wave design.

Alternately, when choosing patio furniture, the square look is definitely in. It's a sleek contemporary style that looks great with solid colored cushions and bright accent pillows. Although the fabric looks too nice for outside, it's actually weather-resistant and resists fading.

If you're building or redesigning a current deck, consider adding levels that step down from one another. Each area can have it's own purpose, such as cooking, seating, dining, etc. Have group seating areas, and other more intimate spots with only two chairs and a small table.

Use paint to add punch to your deck. A colorful deck floor or brightly painted furniture makes an otherwise ho hum deck stand out. Old metal furniture and wooden muskoka chairs take on a new life when painted in bright green, turquoise or red.

Add a pergola or cover to your seating area. Not only does it protect your furniture, but gives the impression of another room. Once again, add interest by using an arch design or curved lines. You'll appreciated being able to take cover from the sun while eating dinner.

Decks no longer look like outdoor additions. Now, the trend is to make them appear as extensions of your indoor living space. Use cozy living room type seating, complete with area rug, coffee table and end tables. Include accents such as indoor style lighting, and hang a mirror and pictures. You can even install windows in a faux wall to be used as a divider.

If you're planning on adding a concrete patio, consider using patterned concrete with stain for a splash of color.

Add to your BBQ area by creating an outdoor cooking station. Add a brick or stone counter with cabinets for holding dishes and glasses. Add a small bar fridge to keep cold beverages close at hand.

Make use of complementary colors when you are decorating. A simple teak or white patio set should have bright accent pillows and corresponding umbrella.

Add outdoor fabric curtains tied together at posts or use bamboo screens for privacy.

Include the relaxing sound of water with the addition of a fountain. Depending on your space restrictions, there are a number of portable fountains that can be added to a corner, or even hung from a wall.

Don't forget to add touches of fresh flowers and plenty of container bouquets.
