Vegetable Dye
How can I make vegetable dyes?
I am trying to learn how to make some vegetable dyes(I was going to start with purple), but I am rather confused when it comes to mordants. I actually want to be using the dye to paint with, and to dye paper, though I notice these types of dyes are generally for fabric. Will this work for the use that I have specified? Also, given what I want to do, are mordants even necessary, or could I just boil berries and strain them? Thanks!
Cool question, something I've always wanted to do, but time being so fast... berries, root veggies (beets for example), wood and barks, are good for dyes. Be sure to strain them really good! you will probably need a mordant, just to help set the dye, even on things other than fabrics. Tannic acid, and alum are good natural choices (black tea, and some barks contain tannic acid), it just seems to help everything work together. You'll have to experiment with how much mordant to use.
